WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.
You own one or more mechanical subsystems, such as the actuation block, the recliner kinematics, or the articulated spine. You'll work on linkage and powertrain design, analysis, packaging, drawings, DFM, and life-cycle testing.
In This Role You Will
- -Own one or more mechanical subsystems from concept through production release.
- -Synthesise linkages and size powertrains — motor, gearbox, leadscrew, belt — against force, stroke, speed, backdrive and duty-cycle targets.
- -Do the hand calculation before you open the solver, then run FEA for stress, deflection, fatigue life and modal response.
- -Package actuators, sensors, PCBAs and harness inside a moving envelope with a human on top of it.
- -Build tolerance stack-ups and release drawings with GD&T a vendor can actually make to.
- -Specify materials and processes — sheet metal, machining, injection moulding, die casting — and drive DFM with suppliers.
- -Design, instrument and run life-cycle and load rigs. Find the failure before a customer does.
- -Review work from engineers junior to you, and defend your own.
What We Hope You'll Bring
- -You have taken a mechanism you designed all the way to a made part, and then broken it on a rig.
- -4+ years in mechanism or electromechanical design.
- -Strong SolidWorks; fluent GD&T and stack-up analysis.
- -You can size a drivetrain from a load case without a catalogue selector.
- -You can explain a fatigue calculation to someone who has never done one.
- -Nice to have: consumer or medical device experience, compliant mechanisms and flexures, NVH work, competition team background (Formula Student, BAJA, Robocon).
