[Research Scientist, Human Factors Application ]
WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.
You own the ground truth our models learn from. You'll work on human studies, the posture and anthropometry measurement stack, spinal load and posture modelling, labelled datasets, and the human envelope of the machines.
In This Role You Will
- -Design and run human studies: protocol, instrumentation, recruitment, ethics, execution, analysis.
- -Own the anthropometry and posture measurement stack — motion capture, pressure mapping, force plates, and the calibration between them.
- -Model spinal load and posture geometry, and define what our systems should actually be optimising against.
- -Produce labelled datasets and evaluation protocols the ML team can train and test on.
- -Work with mechanical and design on the human envelope — reach, clearance, entrapment, and the edges of the population rather than the median.
- -Publish, and represent the work externally.
What We Hope You'll Bring
- -You have designed and run a human-subjects study start to finish, and published or defended the result.
- -PhD or Master's in biomechanics, human factors, kinesiology, physiotherapy research or a related field.
- -Fluent with musculoskeletal modelling — {OpenSim, AnyBody} or equivalent.
- -Strong statistics, and you write your own analysis code.
- -You can tell an ML researcher what their labels actually mean and where they are noisy.
- -Nice to have: pressure mapping or seating research, ergonomics standards and anthropometric databases, clinical collaboration experience.
