WATER is a Biophysical Intelligence research company. Our mission is to teach matter to respond to life: we study how the human body and the physical world respond to each other, and we build machines that sense a body, model its state, and respond in real time. CAMA, an adaptive bed, and FLOW, an adaptive chair, are the first surfaces this research runs on. The work spans three research directions: machine learning and mathematics, bio research, and materials and electronics. The long-range outcomes we care about are human longevity and human experience.
You own the form of our machines: what they look like, feel like, and communicate. You'll work on the industrial design of CAMA and FLOW from concept through production, including CMF and the visual language across the range.
In This Role You Will
- -Own the industrial design of a product from concept through production tooling.
- -Resolve form for objects that articulate — surfaces, splits, gaps and transitions that must work through the full range of motion.
- -Own CMF for surfaces a person is in contact with for eight hours at a time.
- -Prototype constantly — foam, print, mock-up, full scale. Renders communicate decisions; they do not make them.
- -Work daily with mechanical engineers inside a shared envelope, and know when to give ground and when not to.
- -Take design into production: tooling, parting lines, draft, texture specification, vendor colour approval, golden samples.
- -Set and hold the visual language across the product range and its physical touchpoints.
What We Hope You'll Bring
- -You have taken a physical product from sketch to mass production, and it exists.
- -5+ years in industrial design with shipped consumer or hardware products.
- -Strong surfacing CAD — {Rhino, Alias, Fusion or SolidWorks}.
- -Fluent in materials and processes, and you design with the constraint rather than around it.
- -A portfolio that shows the ugly middle, not only the final render.
- -Nice to have: seating or sleep-surface design, products with mechanisms, soft goods and textiles, model-making skills.
